My co-worker brought me an article she found while on vacation over the holidays, thinking I would enjoy it. I howled. Inner Self, Overrated The NYTimes locks their pages after a while, so if you want to read it and not register, do it soon.

Perhaps I'm just tired and cranky after a long day at work, but I couldn't get past the first paragraph. What in God's name does it mean to "judge all relationships in terms of" one's true inner self? And how would doing so make one more "authentic"?

The title indicates my ignorance/disdain shouldn't be an issue; however, I need to understand the straw man before I can enjoy watching him be knocked about.

You don't have to understand the straw man, though it helps. It's amusing on a meta level because it uses so much new age psychobabble. LOL!
